Magnolia Medical: United Hospital Center Improves Patient Outcomes and Margins by Avoiding False-Positive Blood Cultures
United Hospital Center, a member hospital of WVU Medicine, undertook a bold quality improvement project to surpass the accepted norm for blood culture contamination rates hospital-wide. After focused interventions including training and education failed to sustain a contamination rate below 3%, United Hospital Center began a pilot study with the Steripath® Initial Specimen Diversion Device®. With Steripath®, United Hospital Center has achieved and sustained contamination rates below 1%. Their success was the impetus for system-wide value analysis approval and Steripath® has been implemented at multiple hospitals across WVU Medicine.
